Celebrating Onam with an Authentic Onam Sadya: A Complete Guide | ഓണസദ്യ | Happy Onam |

Onam is one of Kerala's most cherished cultural festivals, and no Onam celebration is complete without the iconic Onam Sadya, a feast that brings together a variety of traditional dishes served on a banana leaf. The joy of Onam transcends the boundaries of Kerala, as Malayalees across the globe come together to celebrate this vibrant harvest festival, cooking up a grand Sadya to share with their families and loved ones.

This year, we bring you the delicious and authentic Onam Sadya recipes that we’ve prepared at home! Our video tutorial will guide you through making each dish from the Sadya, ensuring you too can bring this tradition into your own kitchen.

Our Sadya Dishes Include:

  • Parippu (Daal): A simple lentil dish that pairs perfectly with rice.
  • Sambar: The classic tamarind-based vegetable stew.
  • Pulissery: A yogurt-based curry with subtle sour flavors.
  • Pachamoru (Sambharam): A spiced buttermilk drink.
  • Rasam: A tangy soup-like dish that adds flavor to your meal.

Accompanying these curries are:

  • Lime and Mango Pickles: Spicy, tangy delights that add a kick to the Sadya.
  • Payar Thoran and Beetroot Thoran: Delicious stir-fried vegetables.
  • Kovakka Mezhukkupuratti and Pavakka Varuthathu: Crispy fried vegetables that bring a crunchy contrast.
  • Beetroot Pachadi: A refreshing beetroot yogurt salad.
  • Aviyal: A must-have in Onam Sadya, this mixed vegetable dish is flavored with coconut and curry leaves.
  • Inji Curry / Ginger Pickle: This unique ginger-based pickle is often said to be worth 101 curries!

We didn’t stop there! Our Sadya also features homemade banana chips and Sarkara Varatti (jaggery-coated banana chips), adding that extra special crunch to your feast. And of course, what’s an Onam Sadya without Pappadam, a spoon of ghee, and a pinch of salt to serve alongside Parippu Curry?

Finally, the meal is perfectly rounded off with Ada Pradhaman, a rich dessert made from rice, coconut milk, and jaggery, served alongside a ripe banana for that traditional finish.
